Colin Baker and Frazer Hines make for good listening, undiminished by the passing years. The story, while diverting enough, exists mostly to reunite their characters, the Overlord proving a paltry adversary even by Doctor Who’s standards of dim villains with dubious schemes.

Once revealed, the scenario doesn’t actually make much sense. As an atmosphere piece, however, this intrigues nicely (and doesn’t unravel as much as, say, The Android Invasion). Elliot Chapman and Frazer Hines are remarkably on-point in channelling Ben and the Second Doctor.

The ever-young Frazer Hines delights in narrating and playing both himself and the Doctor, but despite his best efforts this adventure feels abridged. The Dying Light exhibits a wondrous complexity better suited to a novel-length treatment, not merely a single audio cd.
