Not enough over-the-top random action to satisfy the box office. Instead, Joy opts for competently scripted, cinematically engaging neo-noir SF exploring memory and obsession against a flooded, climate-apocalypse backdrop. Rebecca Ferguson and Thandiwe Newton (in particular) steal the show from Hugh Jackman.

Despite the none-too-subtle audience manipulation — the minor characters might easily be wearing theatrical masks — Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman make an endearing odd couple in this lovably tragicomic not-quite-biopic of overachieving British ski-jumper, perennial wooden-spooner and unlikely Olympic hero Eddie the Eagle.
