Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

dir. George Lucas (1999)

This has the makings of a good film. Neeson is excellent. Portman and McGregor bring class (even if underused). But Palpatine’s machinations contribute nothing immediate, Lucas draws a grating correlation between accent and intelligence, and Darth Maul dies an unforgivably insipid death.

Run All Night

dir. Jaume Collet-Serra (2015)

Liam Neeson stars as Irishman Jimmy Conlon, a down-and-out enforcer whose loyalty to his lifelong friend and boss (Ed Harris) is finally challenged when Conlon’s estranged son is targeted by the mob. There’s very little to fault here, but also little originality.
