Endeavour, Series 8

Endeavour, Series 8 by Russell Lewis (ITV, 2021) Set fifty years before their broadcast, Series 8’s three feature-length stories work better as historical pieces than as full-fledged murder investigations. That said, Morse is back on track to morph from brilliant young puzzle solver into John Thaw’s slower, more jaded incarnation.

Lewis, Series 1

Lewis, Series 1 (ITV 2006-2007) A respectable enough Morse continuation. The murder investigations more or less pass muster, but it was a bold decision to promote Lewis—the quintessential offsider—to a titular role. Thankfully, the casting of Laurence Fox as DS Hathaway mitigates against possible disaster.

Endeavour, Series 5

Endeavour, Series 5 by Russell Lewis (ITV, 2018) Six feature-length episodes, each self-contained but contributing also to a melancholic series arc. (Anton Lesser has some nice moments as Chief Superintendent Bright.) Morse comes across as antsy rather than preternaturally gifted, but the mysteries are well-crafted to capture the late-60s zeitgeist.
