The cases themselves are relatively slight, split without overlap between Tamara, Bill, and Jake Runyon. As ever, though, San Francisco emerges as its own gritty, gloomy, sordid kind of character, where life is a struggle and even the non-criminals mostly prove unpleasant.

Inexplicably, the audiobook publishers have gone with one narrator for three very disparate point-of-view characters, Sullivan sounding nothing like a 60+ year-old Italian. The twist in Runyon’s case requires a doting mother to have no photos of her son about the house.
