Season 2’s standalone postscript serves as a poignant insight into Death and, through her one day off in a hundred years (spent in company with a suicidal journalist, both experiencing the world and giving him new perspective), the true value of life.

Very little of Season 2 takes part in the real world, which on the one hand limits Dream to a brooding Robert Smith impersonation but on the other allows for more epic stakes. Esmé Creed-Miles puts in an eye-catching performance as Delirium.
The Sandman, Season 1
(Netflix, 2022)
A suitably engrossing, character-based fantasy with concertinaed rather than season-spanning plot arcs. Dark, dreamy and unpredictable, though Gaiman and company missed a trick in not casting Dylan Moran in the lead role, at the very least for a one-off alternative reality episode.
Books of Magic: Moveable Type

A dark story with plenty happening both visually and plot-wise. The human characters are drawn with a certain grotesqueness, the colours at the visceral end of the spectrum. Engaging enough though very much a first instalment and difficult to judge in isolation.
