While the verbal asides of Waititi’s humour-led treatment feel in keeping with punchy comic-book speech bubbles, the ease and saturation of the CGI render Ragnarok’s action scenes far less effective than in still-frame panel form. Tom Hiddleston remains superbly nuanced as Loki.

The humour is well-pitched. The acting can’t be faulted. The score, however, is an unremitting attempt to push epicness upon the viewer, while the CGI makes everything too easy. There’s value to be had envisaging Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston swapping roles.

Most of the film is played for laughs. Chris Hemsworth just about gets away with it but the humour is undercut by consciously hammy acting and ‘unkillable god’ computer-game action scenes. Christian Bale rules the starker moments, channelling his inner Richard O’Brien.
