Though Whithouse offers plenty of humour, the script is more a writer’s guide to character than tenable story. (Stripped of laughs, the plot really doesn’t bear scrutiny.) Rory proves a welcome addition, Arthur Darvill near matching Matt Smith for signature, singular delivery.

Whithouse delivers unto the Wild West setting a diverting yet not insubstantial self-contained episode. Ben Browder makes a compelling marshal. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill put in nuanced performances to balance Matt Smith’s uncommonly volatile embodiment of delighted child and world-weary ancient.

A cleverly twisted, cagily acted, utterly engrossing but ultimately nonsensical Cold War spy drama in which a special team within MI5 work to unravel Russian misdirection and foil a game-changing espionage plot that they only become aware of due to said misdirection.
