Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy dir. Tomas Alfredson (2011) This murky film adaptation of le Carré’s Cold War spy novel respects the viewer enough to tell its story as much by omission and implication as by direct exposition. The acting plays along, yet the tangle, once unravelled, remains self-serving and forgettable.

The Night Manager
The Night Manager by David Farr (BBC, 2016) A murky but well-paced six-episode adaptation of the John le Carré novel. Tom Hiddleston is perhaps a tad too Bondlike, but the support cast brims over with quality (and nuance) and co-star Hugh Laurie is chillingly convincing as arms dealer Richard Roper.
