The Descent of the Drowned

An immersive Indo-Persian fantasy whose distressingly real human elements—an unforgiving caste system; the legal, religious and social subjugation and callous brutalisation of women—choke out the more speculative content. A powerful book but one that, strong protagonist notwithstanding, offers little catharsis.
